My husband's boss (she's from China) won't let my husband have Wednesday's off to go to church. She changed his schedule so that he has Monday's off, but she won't let him have Wednesday's off so that he can go to church with me. She leaves EVERY FRIDAY and goes to church, leaving my husband, to run HER store, so that she can go to church. When my husband asked if he could go to church, she replied, and I quote "You can't go to church because then I'll have to close my store down, and I'm not going to do it!" I'm severely irritated with her and the way she runs her job (I worked there for 4 days but because I needed to sit down because of torn ligaments in my knee, she called me a LAZY AMERICAN and wouldn't let me... so I quit!!). I really want him to go to church, and I believe there are laws against employers not letting their employees attend church, but I'm not for sure... can someone PLEASE help me out!!!

There are federal laws that protect your husband. His employer is required to post the notice about those laws against discriminatory practices like this and others. Get a hold of a labor attorney to get restitution from your former employer. Go to:http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/qanda.html. Youll see that religion is one of the first few mentioned. Best of luck.

A boss is under no obligation to give the day off to an employee so that that employee can conduct personal business. She is not preventing him form attending church on his own free time and the job determines when the free time will be not the employee On the other hand, she is the boss, it is her store so she gets to take off when she decides. That is why she pays your husband, so that she can leave when she needs to and so that your husband can keep the store for her while he is gone. Not withstanding this, the woman might also be a mean boss, then your husband need to find other employment.

There is no employment law that applies here. Going to church is not a protected class or act. If he doesn't like the schedule and his boss won't change it, his only option is to leave and find a job that will let him have that time off.

Employment is a contract. If at time of hire your husband said he couldn't work on wen. . and was hired with that understanding. Then their may be a breach of agreement. But, for the gov. to have a law requireing a employer to respect someomes religious practices would be unconstitutional

Employers do not have to accomodate employees for going to church anymore. I wish I could remember which act that was passed in from many years ago , but I cannot.

I agree with fr. chuck. If it's so important that your husband attend Wednesday church, then he's going to have to change jobs.
It IS her store and I'm pretty sure that she can hire and fire at will.
