The Hobbit - because the hero is very small, yet has both courage and integrity.

Ender's Game - because the main character is both intelligent and has strength of will... and the twist at the end.

The Wizard of Earthsea - it's about a young wizard with great powers who must learn temperance and control.

Maybe my all-time favorite book is Catch 22. While I never served in the military, I am a former civilian US Government employee. Believe me, the book is not a work of fiction. Maybe a teenager or young adult is not cynical enough to appreciate Catch 22.

Meet the Austins by Madeleine L'Engle
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Mustang, Wild Spirit of the West by Marguerite Henry
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

They are eminently readable books, and I have even re-read them years later and still enjoyed them. They all teach something. BTW, did a report on how women were presented in Mustang, Wild Spirit.... and got an A++ for my Gender & Education class.

I have all seven books of the Foundation series by Asimov.
These books were initially written in the 40's and 50's but are still timeless today.
The Riftwar Saga is a close second.

"The Queen's Gambit" by Walter Trevis, is the most remarkable work of fiction that I have read in the past 20 years. Although the plot of the book would seem to appeal to only a limited readership, I have loaned it out to a wide circle of friends, and all have enjoyed it.
Thoroughly recommended to all age groups.

THIRTEEN MOONS, by Charles Frazier.
One of my favorite books of all time.
It took Frazier nine years to write 13 moons. Its very well written.
Its about a mans life, from the time of revolution intill he sees cars and celle phones.
Its the best on my list.
But there are so many I really can't choice one.
So...
FOR ONE MORE DAY, by Mitch Albom, is mad good too.

Lovely Bones! it teaches you about the reality of life and so on. Or Long Way Down, which teaches you about what can happen if you do not commit suicide and the hard core truth of life. I lvoe these two books because they are about reality. I also love the book Comfort because it's about how no one can squash your dreams, not even your mother.
