It goes back to a very basic human condition--and that is--that as humans we prefer people, and by extension, objects, that we recognize.

Would you rather to be driven across country by your best friend or by a stranger? Both will get you to the destination, but you want a brand (friend) that you recognize.

Same with products.

People don't want no name ibuprofen, they want Advil--even though it's the same thing.

This is also why brand names like "Xerox" and "Band Aid" are now common vernacular.

Companies that produce branded products put a lot of effort into creating a positive image associated with their product, even if it is something as simple as soda, for example. When a consumer decides whether to buy Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi vs. generic cola, he will likely think about all the ads he's seen about each and then decide, based on his feelings from the ads, which brand to buy. Brands make people believe something-- if you drink Pepsi, then you're just as sexy and successful as their advertisers (i.e., Beyonce or Britney Spears). By using celebrities in their ads, companies are telling a consumer that she will have something in common with the celebrity and, in fact, be the same as the celebrity just by using the same product.

Generic is not necessarily better or worse-- usually it is equivalent to a brand name-- but it really depends on the manufacturer. Many big department store cosmetics companies also manufacture drug store cosmetics, as well as generic, "no name" cosmetics. The best way to check for quality on Cheerios vs. supermarket O's is to compare the ingredient list and see if the same stuff is in each product. Sometimes, you'll find the generic is actually better than the brand. Brands are only more expensive because more money is allocated into advertising.

People know about branded products more so they use them. The branded products by hearing about their garuntee to work. Take paper towels for instance. I did a science project (like 5th grade long time ago...) i tested a home brand paper towel, 7th generation, and Bounty. Bounty's name is heard in the buisness and they get alot of feedback because used more. So, they perfect their item every time. Therefore branded in this case is better.

It depends on what it is and how well the generic product is made. Some generic products are actually made by the branded product.
