has nothing to do with technicanl abilities. my guess is a licensing agreement between id and Microsoft.

I'm guessing due to the technical limits of the PS2 hardware. "Doom 3" ran very well on Xbox, but I think that many people were surprised at just how well given the PC system requirements of the time. Some high-end PC ports do well on Xbox because of the more powerful hardware but don't fare as well on PS2. "Max Payne" is another example of this, albeit an older game than "Doom 3."

PS2 doesn't have the same power that the xbox has. Even the xbox version was a smaller version of the pc version as the xbox doesn't have the same graphical power as a high end pc.
