what they do is mentally distance that person from the others of that race they hate.
Or they say $h!t like , that person is just an acceptable exception.

This is always amazing to me growing up. Some boys were so racist, but a good football player was exempt from any racial slurs or persacution. The other players loved them.
They dated white girls and the boys looked the other way.
But a hard working studious boy was nothing but Black.
Ridiculed, persacuted and abused.
Same with Celebritys that black girl Janet Jackson is ogled by white boys and that's great! But to really date a black girl in school?? Never!

Racists will typically respect the talent, skill and ability demonstrated by a celebrity's body of work, but ultimately dismiss and hold the person as a lower "class" or "caste" or human being.
For instance, a true comment I've heard more than once:
"Man, that little chink Bruce Lee sure can do that kung fu stuff."
Note: I'm Asian American.
I've heard the same kind of dismissive hypocrisy voiced toward African American entertainers and athletes (Louis 'Pops' Armstrong endured it, Sammy Davis Jr. endured it, Ali endured it...).
