I am 37 and have heard the phrases"the gig is up"in many situations.i have heard it is gun fights ,in mystries solved and possibly in sailing

the gig is up and the jig is up are 2 different phrases the gig is up means that something is conluded and can no longer go foreward anymore and all of your answers on jig are correct

Does there have to be only one meaning? The English language is full of phrases like that, they are called 'idioms'. A word, or a phrase, can have several different meanings.

it means; the answer has been found, or a captin`s personal boat ; a 2 wheeled, 1 horse carriage ; a 4 pronged hook ; a fast pulling boat used for racing.

it is really--the jig is up.
a dance you have been doing is over.
the truth is now known--so you can stop dancing.
the dance referring to your little fancy moves--trying to decieve.
dancing around the truth may be another way of putting it.
just another example of how a phrase can be misheard and repeated wrongly

actually it is the jig is up, meaning all has been discovered, like if you were jerking someone around and they figured out what you were up to it would be "the jig is up" goes in the song "the jig is up the news is out they finally found me, that renegade that ....well you know
