I have one and I you don't need a bank account. You activate it online and then to add minutes you can pay by credit card or buy "Top-Up" cards from stores like Wal-Mart or Best Buy.

when my daughter got her prepaid monthly at&t phone, they made her give her bank info. the money was taken out automatically from her savings account.
If you are buying prepaid cards, I didn't have to use bank info. when you buy the phone the first card you use should take you through the activation process.
why go prepaid. it's a pain everytime you run out of minutes. check into cheap plans first. i've found them better in the long run. prepaid minutes cost more per minute anyway.
good luck
