I have a Masters degree in Special Education, and currently I'm taking classes in Education Administration so that I could possibly become an administrator in a school. However, I was thinking of getting an EdD which is a doctoral degree in education. I know that one can become a licensed clinical psychologist with this degree, but I've never come across someone who uses this degree in establishing a private clinical practice. Given the path I've already taken with my education, is getting an EdD the most common sense path for me to become a clinical psychologist? I'm not going to go for a PhD or PsyD because I'd have to take many pre-requisite classes. Any Advice??

You CAN practice as a therapist/counseling psychologist with an Ed.D. For instance, professors at East Tennessee State, where I got my master's, practice routinely with it as you still need to go through the licensure process as Psy.D. or a Ph.D. would, however, you would not be trained to administer testing. So, you would technically be a counseling psychologist, not a clinical psychologist. Once you have your Ed.D. you could also become a faculty member in a school counseling program if you choose to do so in addition to opening your own practice. However, when you open your own practice, you need to be licensed and that typically takes two years depending on what licensure you want. Check out some doctoral programs and write their chairs an e-mail asking what their programs would require from you for entrance. I believe an Ed.D. will require similar prerequisites to a Ph.D. program.

Uhhhh - - - -The only way to be a clinical psychologist is to earn a PsyD. An educational Doctorate doesn't cut it And a Psychologist cannot administer medications.

You can become a psychiatrist by getting an MD specializing in Psychiatry. You can practice therapy with a MSW as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I believe you can also practice as Nurse practitioner with a Masters in the appropriate subject. Frankly, I do not believe you can practice as a mental health professional with a Masters in Education..

You cannot become a licensed clinical psychologist with an EdD. The only way you can become a clinical psychologist is by earning a PhD or a PsyD. The only people with EdD's who are independent practicing "clinical" psychologists at this point are those who were "grandfathered" in under old licensing laws.

In Michigan, you can also obtain a Limited License in Psychology (LLP) and practice under the supervision of someone fully licensed. Supervision is typically minimal and therefore not in any way restrictive. The LLP is only obtained with a Master's degree in psychology and the practicum requirements, etc.
Other states may have similar programs.

The vague but very accurate answer is.... it depends where you live/where you plan to get licensed. Please check with your provincial college or state board so that you can know definitively one way or the other.
