Because it's human nature to be competitive and and to take sides.
Is primitive as it may sound, it's the truth, and it's been historically played out before. Poor vs Rich, christian vs muslim, christian vs judiasm, judiasm vs muslim, shiites vs sunnis, catholics vs protestants, republicans vs democrats, redsox fans vs yankee fans, springfield high vs boston high, nextdoor neighbor vs nextdoor neighbor, whatever. People love the drama that escalates, even if it is rooted into the simplist differences. Eventually this drama escalates into violence. And it isn't until it becomes violent that people start to realize just how petty these differences are. Anyone who understands what Romeo and Juliet is really about ( and no it's not a freakin love story ) can understand what I'm trying to say. Anyway, thats why.

Bush may or may not be the great uniter, But they press has since Vietnam held the title of the great divider. Being the great divider sells air time.
I'm still looking for some one as conservative as a cross between JFK & Martin Luther King in this election season.

Where have you been for the last 15 years, or so. GWB doesn't have a corner on that market. This country was so divided under Clinton, that it hasn't come together since then. For a brief moment in history, this country did unite, but it was short lived in the months following 9/11.
The political arena usually fragments about this time, every two years, just before the elections. Politicians can't pretend to like each other at election time, it would be un-American.

Of course you have. Wars need enemies, but they have become your own countrymen.
'Left' and 'right' alike - who probably believe none of the philosophy they adhere to - are divided not because of thought process, but the bloodlust of a crowd to a football match. Media is an unreality onto itself, but for right-wingers castrating liberals for being 'terrorist sympathisers' is greatly far-fetched, and in truth the arguments are non-issues.
The divide is settled by injecting petty squabling into the masses. The current administration benefits from this confusion, yet no faith must be found in rivals that attempt to capitalise on it. The extremity goes both ways. It seems horrible that whatever word you use to describe yourself just gets cannabalised into this great big media machine. Please do not adjust your set.

It takes 2 to unite, only 1 to divide.
There are extremists in both parties who want to divide. there is 1 difference. Extremists are consigned to the fringe of the Republican party. Extremists control the Democratic party.

The divide in this country is on philosophical issues. The liberals want more government control and want their power back. They have gotten more and more unhinged. Conservatives have dug in and are fighting back. No more being walked over. We are tired of gay marriage, high taxes, treason, and a lot of other garbage.
Liberals want to blame Bush for everything. Too bad he is not up for reelection and you have 2 more years of him. I can only imagine what it will be like when a conservative wins in 2008.

NO, the Democrats are dividing this country because they will find a way to denigrate every single advance that W has made, all because they just can't get it through their little pea brains that Gore lost and Kerry lost because more people disagreed with the Democrats idiotic policies.

I cannot remember a time when conservatives and liberals would have been considered "united," by any stretch...
Bush was considered the "great uniter," because for a brief moment in time, politics were put aside and this nation of ours was concerned only with our safety...

Bush did unite the country and Americans. Liberals aren't Americans so it doesn't matter if Bush united them or not...that wasn't his job!

Are you sure the Democrats have not done the "dividing'? I have yet to hear a constructive idea from them in six years!
