I live near a high school, and the creepy kids keep pulvering my mailbox with a baseball bat as they criuise by. Short of stuffing the thing full of bricks, how can I protect my poor mailbox?

Get a nice new shiny mail box.
Use a concrete post and put it going through the bottom of your mailbox. Put some bricks in or more concrete.

Have you mail temporarily forwarded to a friends house or a PO Box

Then wait.

Too bad they're not driving over them - it's much better that way.

Perhaps if you moved back some....actually - while it not being used as a mailbox -- you don't have to have it exactly in the legal location.
Move it back a couple of feet so that a car would have to get on the grass to reach it. Embed some steel pipes (about 3/8" galvanized) and at least a 1-1/2' or two foot deep pointing at a 45 degree angle in the direction of traffic and painted to match your lawn - sticking up about 4"-5".

I was looking at smarthome.com, as I knew they had devices that would alert you when the mailbox is opened, and thought that perhaps if the mailbox would open when baseball batted - at least you'd know when it happened.

Anyway, I found a rather secure looking mailbox on sale there!
Here it is (available in black or white):http://www.smarthome.com/74662.html

And here is the manual (also in black and white):

If you knew a demolitions expert, you could probably get it set up so that your existing mailbox would deter at least one of them and make way for the new mailbox in one stroke.

They make a new mailbox just for this reason. It's called the StrongBox and can be found at one of the major home retailers. They cost about $60 and have really thick steel on the outer shell. They are approved by the USPS and don't look bad. Secure it to a good post and they would have to run over it to get it down. Another method of deterence,I sunk four 6 foot metal T-posts on each side of the box. Found a piece of bat, small ding, but box is still there.

Make a metal frame to hold your mailbox, then purchase two 4-way lug wrenches at an auto parts store, and weld them to the frame so they stick up above the top of your mailbox on each side. If they hit them with a bat, it will jar their teeth out.

I have seen some mailboxes fabricated out of steel. Framed up with steel and line with thick plate steel. Other than going to extreme, if you have the time, lay in the bushes with camera and WAIT for them to return.

Have others' been hit on your block too? Pictures say 1000 words. Try not to take the law into your own hands. It is hard not to, but don't.

Instead of stuffing it full of bricks,i've seen mailbox stands built with brick around the whole thing. Some looked pretty damn good.
Its a shame we have to resort to such exstreems. Maybe a dummy box made of solid steel...

fill a couple of 1/2 gallon zip-loc bags with bright red paint. put them in the mailbox. next time your box gets bashed, call the cops and tell them to look for cars at the carwash washing off red paint. someones parents are going to wonder how all that red paint got all over their car, inside and out.

concrete a 4x4 post into the ground about a foot or so deep and make it a decent size hole in diameter. fill it up with concrete. extra secure your mailbox with more screws and all. If it keeps up file a police report.

Glue six inch nails all over the mail box and the next time the little darlings attack it with their bats, they will go home without them.

No really easy way, best way would be to brick it in, or catch them on camera doing it, it is a federal offence :)
