The grue first appeared in the text adventure Dungeon which circulated among college computer centers in the late 1970's. Dungeon was later commercialized as Zork.
One of the first locations in the game was a white house. If you tried to go upstairs in the house without first obtaining a light, you were warned that you were likely to be eaten by a grue. If you went upstairs anyway, you were in fact eaten by a grue, and had to restart the game.
I have always assumed that the name "grue" was a back-formation from "gruesome".
The term was also popular among some Dungeons & Dragons players as a name for any unknown but presumably threatening creatures: "There might be a bunch of grues in there; we ought to throw the halfling in first and find out." This could have influenced the Dungeon computer game, or vice versa, as both were popular around the same time period.

It is a bird. The word "grue" is from French and means "crane". As for the "mixture" mentionned above it is "roux" and consists of flour and oil to make a base to thicken stews among others.
