There is a fundamental difference between truth and fact.
It is true that God exists but I cannot prove it.
It is a fact that President Bush said he invaded Iraq because of weapons of mass destruction but it is not true.
Catholics believe that the Bible teaches truth about God but it is not historically accurate at all times.
The Bible's primary purpose is to teach us about God and His (or Her) love for us, not to teach history or science.
With love in Christ.

The two never contradict if you understand context.
Science deals with the 'how?'.
The Bible deals with the 'who?' and 'why?'.
There does seem to be contradictions from what we know but i believe that the science in the bible would not be recorded as acurately because the Hebrew people did not care about numbers (amounts and dates), they cared about who was there and why did it happen to which people?
An historical text written by greek people would be very different, they would have specific dates and times and values for things that happened, but then they never considered why it happened, merely what happenend.
If the bible is always read literal then mistakes will be made. When reading a science textbook, one does not focus on who wrote it and why they wrote it. Or why the person who discovered something was actually even studying what he/she discovered. We should only care about the factual detail in these books.
In this way it is always important to remember context. Science does not contradict the bible and the bible does not contadict science. If we start to ignore the context then we will start to have problems working out which we should believe, when in fact if we are smart enough, we should never have to get to that point.

What people have to remember is that the Bible was written a long time ago. What would have happened if the ocean tides were explained to be because of the pull of the moon. People would have thought it was crazy. Instead, the BIble, Quran, etc. offer a model of living that is acceptable. Once you recognize this, science and its discoveries can actually strengthen how you look at things from a religious standpoint. Otherwise you will always be stuck in the past....the way past.

By always following a literalistic interpretation of EVERY biblical text, the Bible will often be contradicted by what science proves to be true. For instance, the belief that the universe was created in six days is contradicted by the scientific fact that the universe is billions of years old! If the word "day" is interpreted symbolically instead of literally, then the facts of science and the truths of the Bible can co-exist.

No, there are many historical and scientific discoveries that have proven things in the Bible. Even people who do not believe in the theology of the Bible often agree that it is a valid historical document. I believe in the Bible but yet I love learning the sciences. I do not agree with everything: evolution (remember this is a theory not a law). Also, I have never felt as though my faith has been put in question by science. :-)

Actually science is a methodology, and the bible is a book. They cannot contradict each other. The bible cannot be used to refute science, and science cannot be used to refute the bible. Scientific methods can be used to check the accuracy of biblical texts, but cannot say with authority whether or not the content is correct.
So, no.

I think that the Bible and science are compatible. When you study what the Bible really says about creation and compare this with science facts and not theories, I have found no contradictions.
