Take logarithms (base 10)

Thus n = (1 - log 8.5)/log 1.02
≈ 8.2069
So it occurs in the 8th year

Without logs?? All you can do is calculate 10/8.5 and start multiplying 1.02*1.02*1.02....... and see how many times you have to do it before the answer exceeds 10/8.5
