the 73 mets were 82 -80 and took the athletics to the seventh game of the world series

The 1980 Yankees had only 59 wins, the fewest ever, but that was during a strike year. For a non-strike year, it's the 1918 Red Sox, who were 75-51, although the season was cut short due to war.

Since going to a 162-game schedule, the crown belongs to this year's Cardinals with 83 wins. Before that it was the 1987 Twins, who won after going 87-75 during the regular season.

when talking about a 162 game schedule, the answer is NOT this years cardinals, but rather as a previous poster said was the 1973 mets who were in fact 82-79. they clinched the division in the first game of a doubleheader on the day after the season was supposed to have ended, so they did not bother playing the 162nd game.

the 2005 padres had a chance as they won their division with an 82-80 record, but they did not advance past the first round of the playoffs.
