I have wood Panneling in my basement and would like to paint it. What is the quickest way to do so but to also make the paint look nice and last?

If you have large grooves in your paneling you can fill them in with putty and sand smooth. Next apply a coat of Kiltz primer. This dries within the hour. Next paint. It really does look good. You can also cover it with a thick liner paper first. I got mine at Lowe's. Hang it horizonally and cover seems with putty and sand and then paint. You can also use a thick paper sold at home improvement stores that can be painted over. This covers any imperfections in paneling and also will cover the grooves in the paneling.

I painted the panelling in my basement about 15 years ago and am ashamed that it hasn't had a fresh coat. The paint has lasted well. I used a good oil primer and an eggshell latex. It really depends on what your panelling is made of. Mine was actually thin plywood, fifties era but some of it has a plastic type of finish. I would try to take a sample to the paint store. Probably Bullseye 1-2-3 primer and a latex acrylic would work.

Painting panelling changes a room from being drab and dated to a fresh, country look. It's a great improvement. Especially if it is a light colour in the basement. Good luck.

cass, i suggest using a high quality acyrillic latex paint with a 3/8 to 1/2 long knap. certainly you will need to work with the panelling surface clean and relatively free of dust, dirt, etc... also watch the temperature you will be applying the paint in.
