How do affiliate programs know thier visiters?

Hey, ive decided to do a pay per click campaign with my new up and coming site, and i know that most people are into the habit of invalid clicking. So my question is most campaigns ( pay per click ) do have their security mesures for this habit, and i want to know how they do it??i mean is it just recognizing an ip address??

i think its done with marker cookies in the browser

Yeah recognizing by IP, if you already experimented with server programming you know Web traffic passes around Browser Type, Query Type, among other things, IP address included.
