answer, the phrase "narrowminded bigot" is used over and over again?

2006-10-22 13:58:36 · 16 answers · asked by Bastet's kitten 6 in Society & Culture Cultures & Groups Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender

I had a question about gay men and lesbians, wondering why gay men seemed more friendly than gay women. It has been my experience that lesbians were very cliquish and close-ranked. I was wondering why that was. I mean, I didn't know if it was just gay women in my area or if there was something else at play. That's all I wanted to know, and I got labeled as a bigot for asking (I think it was "prude lesbo" or something that said I was a bigot). When I toured other answers to see if I could get my question answered, I began to see a pattern. If any person asked a legitimate question, without meanness or spite, and the question dealt with any sort of negativity or stereotype, the answerers wouldn't face the question, they would just label the questioner a bigot and collect their two points. I would think that the answerers would take the opportunity to correct the wrong ideas and to set right the falsehoods that abound about homosexuality.

Yes, actually, I do get the irony, and it disappoints me. I would think that a group of persons who have been marginalized would try not to do it to someone else.

Hmmm. I've never called anyone that or been called that. It's unfortunate people aren't willing to give a shot to the "harder" questions, or like you said, the uncomfortable ones. We just had a huge spat with a group of bashers this last 3 weeks and this has left everyone on edge. My apologies to you if you seemed to get caught in the middle. (Bastet's Kitten is an adorable screen name. I have three Sons of Bast snuggled on the couch) Blessings my dear.

It could be that people misunderstood your meaning. And, I guess the reason gay people use the word bigot a lot is that they run into a hell of a lot of bigotry. Some people on the internet got you wrong. Big deal.

It's not like you're going to be fired from your job, ostracized by your friends and family, lose custody of your children, be booted out of military service, not be allowed to marry, be ridiculed, and have to fear for your personal safety just because someone on yahoo got pissed off.

One of the things that gay people get told an awful lot is something like: "Gee, you're taking this way too seriously."

I think that is the advice that would apply here. You seem like a very thoughtful, intelligent young woman to me, by the way. Too bad there are not more people like you, and I sincerely mean that.

Because some people are narrow-minded bigots when asking us questions, and it tries our patience.

I don't think that these questions make us uncomfortable to think about or answer, but I think those of you with limited gay exposure don't realize what your questions imply or state.

By asking why gay men are friendlier than lesbians, you are implying that lesbians are rude in general, when in reality it was only those you knew of. Try walking a mile in our shoes every once in a while when you ask these questions, and maybe then you'll get better answers. We hear bigotry and insults all the time, so why not treat us kindly and asking politely??

Not aiming at anyone in particular, but people, you get what you give!!!!

I have to apologize on the behalf of whoever insulted you. This section has gone to hell, and we get so many bigoted questions in this section that are vulgar and beyond any sort of intelligent thought process, that automatically some of us don't stop to read the rest or think that maybe that's not what the asker meant, and just jump into our anger.
So, I'm sorry for that. I, myself, try to read the questions before I jump to any conclusions.

That's just how prude lesbo answers *everything*.

I'm sorry that your experiences with lesbians has left you in the cold. I know some who are like that, but very few compared to the many, many friendly, fun-loving ones I know. I have also known a few gay men who were exclusionary divas, but many, many more who are good friends to me. There's always a couple of jerks in the mix, regardless of their orientation!

I won't comment on the accusations. I didn't do it.
As for the other question...Well being female could you not see the minor possibility that a few lesbians might see you as "competition"? The fact that you aren't a lesbian doesn't occur to them and yes, many lesbians(as well as Gay Men) haven't always been Gay or lesbian. With men, you aren't a threat.

Assuming all gay men are friendly, or all lesbians are rude is the same as assuming all black people eat watermelon, or all Asians are good at math, or all people who ask poorly formed questions are narrow minded bigots.

Only a narrowminded bigot wouldn't get it. *cough**cough*... ANYWAY, I prefer to call those idiots the "hypocritical, fairy-tale-believing, religious crackpots." Why? They're usually the ones who ask skewed crap to purposely instigate like, "Is being gay a choice or are they born with it?" and then add a dumb comment like, "They should convert to Christianity now and stop their sinning ways" or sh*t like that. You don't expect us to view them as anything OTHER than "narrowminded bigots," do you?

whenever someone comes in here and asks an obviously sincere, genuine question, I always answer in the most sincere way I can.
however, some people don't word their questions in a sincere way. there are a lot of people who come in here and verbally attack us. quote Bible verse out of context. use profanity, call us abominations, say all kinds of nasty things....they ARE narrow-minded bigots. people who don't know or care to know facts and just spew vile, hateful insults without bothering to learn the truth or actually getting to know people...blanket hatred...deserve to be called out on what they truly are.
