why would they want to become a state? They get all the benefits of statehood, with few demands of the US govt. Best of both worlds if you ask me as far as the people of Puerto Rico are concerned.

As for the people of the US-that is a different story. I don't think that any commonwealth should get all benefits of being a state - I think some benefits should be afforded to them, but not all. All benefits should be reserved for statehood only.

Not quite quickly, that might take years. It hasn't emerge as a state considering that good, such a lot Puerto Ricans like Puerto Rico the way in which it's. But if it does emerge as a state, Puerto Rico may have plenty extra probabilities. But if someday it does emerge as a state, I desire that it is going to keep the equal for century's to come back. I have no idea so much approximately this matter, i am just a child!

As an American-puerto rican who's live in both the states and the commonwealth of PR i believe it is in the best intrest of Puerto Rico to remain in commonwealth status as WE as a people need to make our own laws based on our culture and our beliefs..so that we may govern ourselves and not allow our future generation to be governed by a country who's beliefs are so unparalleled to ours...that Puerto Rico would change dramatically and negatively as to lose OUR true identity

here's the official scoop.
pretty place, good food, nice people too!

The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Spanish: Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico, IPA [esˈtaðo ˈlibɾe asoˈsjaðo de ˈpweɾto ˈriko]), also Porto Rico (archaic) and more commonly Puerto Rico, is a United States territory with Commonwealth status[1] located in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands. The archipelago of Puerto Rico includes the main island of Puerto Rico, the smallest of the Greater Antilles, and a number of smaller islands and keys, the largest of which are Mona, Vieques, and Culebra.

The nature of Puerto Rico's political relationship with the United States is the subject of ongoing debate in the island and also in the United Nations.[2] Those who support maintaining the status quo (i.e., Commonwealth status) insist that upon attaining this status, Puerto Rico entered into a voluntary association with the U.S. "in the nature of a compact", but according to a President's Task Force report, Puerto Rico is an unincorporated organized territory of the United States, subject to the plenary powers of the United States Congress and with the "right to establish a constitution for the internal administration of government and on matters of purely local concern"

I think Puerto Rico should stay a commonwealth. I do not think they should become a state. I think they like the fact that they are part of the United States-yet-they are their own country. If they became part of the U.S., they would lose their country because they would have to adopt to our rules in the legal system and such.
So, I prefer that they remain the country they are and stay a commonwealth instead of becoming a state.

Never.

Why? Nationalism, that is why. Puerto Ricans will never give up their ethnicity to become a state of the Union.

On the other hand, the rent per capita is so low, that if PR becomes a state, most of the money for aid would go to the island alone. No American will lobby for that.

I think that PR will only become a state when PR is ready to it is a commonwealth with great pride in there culture and they do not want to lose that...I do hope that if it does one day become a state that other US owned lands do too.

No, it will not be a US state. Puerto Rico's nationality (culture, language, identity) is way too strong. Also the US does not want it.
