Sounds German considering that the last four letters "wald" means "forest" in German (pronouced VALD).

Back in the old days, people got their last names because of a certain attribute they had or of their profession. Someone whose last name is "Schlosser" may mean that his ancestor was a tool-maker (Schlosser means either tool or toolman).

Definitely German, possibly a place name. There is a hotel and a restaurant with that name in Friedland.
