To first start of this equation, would it be
$50 = .15x + x

?

no the equation would look like this:
15 /100 x m=$50
0.15 xm=$50
m= $50 /0.15
m= $333.33
he needs to sell $333.33 worth of food.
i used 15/100 because this is the same as %15

Approximately $333.39 in order to make $50 in tips.
333.39 x .15 = 50.00

divide this to get x which is the money needed to gain 50dollars tip.
