x is the price
12x --- regular
8(x + .11) --- premium

12x + 8(x+.11)= 23.08
12x + 8x + .88 = 23.08
20x + .88 = 23.08
20x = 22.20
x = 1.11

regular = 1.11
premium = 1.11 + .11 = 1.22

check answer
12(1.11) + 8(1.11 + .11) =
13.32 + 8.88 + .88 = 23.08

Hope this helps

x = regular
y = premium

12x + 8y = 23.08 Eq 1

y = x+0.11 Eq 2

12x + 8(x+0.11) = 23.08

20x + 0.88 = 23.08

20x = 23.08 - 0.88

20x = 22.20

x = 22.20/20

x = $1.11 per gallon (regular)
y = $(1.11 + 0.11) = $ 1.22 (premium)

Clearly before the year 2004!

Let's break it down.

A gallon on regular gas costs X per gallon.

A gallon of premium gas costs X + .11 per gallon.

Therefore, 12X + 8 * (X + .11) = 23.08 or

12X + 8X + .88 = 23.08

20X + .88 = 23.08

20X = 22.20

X = 1.11

A gallon of regular gas = 1.11

A gallon of premium gas = 1.22

price of regular = R
price of premium = P

12*R + 8*P = 23.08
P-R=0.11

Using substitution...
P=0.11+R
12*R + 8*(0.11+R) = 23.08

Expanding the 8...
12*R + 0.88 + 8*R = 23.08

Simplifying the R's...
20*R + 0.88 = 23.08

Subtracting 0.88 from both sides...
20*R = 22.20

Dividing both sides by 20...
R = 1.11

Finding P
P=0.11+R
P=1.22
