Okay the cost of living in Austin is nowhere near that of California. California is insanely high, especially real estate.
Austin is a great city, I love it. The school's fantastic. Second best accounting school in the nation, currently 5th-ranked football team (#1 last year), number one party school, number one baseball team summer 05...
Half an hour away is San Marcos, with a HUGEEE outlet mall. I think it's the biggest in the country. It has everything--Neiman Marcus, Lacoste, Nike, Liz Claiborne--everything you could ever imagine. So, yeah, shopping's good.
Traffic is bad around downtown. 35 and Lamar are always backed up in the afternoon. But the regular, surface streets aren't that bad.
Clubs....LOTS. Sixth street is known all over for the nightlife. Fifth street, SIXTH STREET, and seventh street are all crawling with bars and clubs. However, since UT just got the title of Number One Party School in the Nation from the Princeton Review, the cops have started to crack down a little more.
I hope I answered everything!

NO way Austin is expensive. Cali is way to expensive than Austin. You can get a nice decent house in a good neighborhood for less than 200k. The only hitch is you need to have a car as the local transports are not that developed. There are loads of good clubs and Austin is full with many multi cuisine restaurants. It is a nice place to live specially if you r coming from Miami, as you will experience the same young crowd and the same extended summer. UT is one of best univ in the country, so if you get in it, it will be very good for you. Traffic is a little problem here, but definitely less as compared to major cities of Cali. they are also coming up some toll roads, some of which will be operational this Nov onwards. As for the attractions, It has a beautiful lake which offers loads of activity and some very nice camping and hiking places which are very close by. I have stayed in Fremont, Ca and also in Chicago. I will admit, the cities have a charm , but Austin has the spirit and less expensive that Fremont and Chicago. So welcome to Austin, and hope you come here.

I lived in Austin from 1976 to 1989 and I loved it. I know that UTA is a fine school and yes it was expensive there. You would need a part time job to live there. For a 19 year old woman it is great.
There are many places to go to shop and there are plenty of places to see and you can travel to San antonio or Houston or Dallas.
It is a great city and worth the move.

Austin is your typical large university town plus add in the fact that it is the state capital. Imagine what all that entails. It is also the gay capital of Texas if you are into that lifestyle. There is also the only nudist park in the state.
