They received their nickname at the turn of the 20th century (around 1900) after they switched uniform colors from the brown of their old St. Louis Browns uniforms to red. Since the Cincinnati team at the time already had the "Reds" nickname, the St. Louis team adopted the Cardinals.

Cardinals are all over this area and thus they gave it that name as the red cardinal is all over Missouri area.
