I've had neck and shoulder pain for 3 days now. (I thought it was from sleep as well) I've tried the heat and it seems not so bad while it's on, but overall, it hasn't really helped me.
Anyhow, try the heat. You typically use ice for the first 24 hours and heat afterwards.

If I have back pain I usually take warmer showers tahn normal and then towrds end of shower use cold water to cool myself off, yu don't have turn the cold water on that just depends on how used to hot wayer you are. I also try not to lay on that side for a night or two or sometimes I stretch myself out while I'm sleeping, that can depend on how you are used to sleeping. I would definitely recommend stretching once before you go to bed, stretch real good when you wake in the morning and maybe one or 2 other times. You will loosen up, I understand it hurts but, it always works for me and quite a few people do it. You can also try fast and extra strength pain relievers, I recommend advil liuid gels, they work the best for me. You can also try propping up your neck tonight and while on the road.

Should apply ice for 20 minute intervals the first 24 hours. Then begin to alternate at 20 minute intervals with heat then cold. Always protect your skin with a cloth to prevent a burn from ice or heat.

Well, if it is muscle then you would apply heat. If it is inflammation then you would apply cold for 20 minutes alternating with heat for 20 minutes with 20 minute break in between.

it depends.. some heating with work or cold pack.. it depends on what your body will accept or reject. You can also try some massage therapy that's works out great to... or even some rekki or seeing a chiropracter... there are many things that can be done. I even had accupuncture done... That for me was the best. It may not be the best for you.. you have to find your niche' to what works for you better.

apply heat.
Then tonight when you go to sleep, sleep on your back without a pillow. it will help your neck.
(also, putting something like icyhot=a muscle relaxer type thing helps)
