It is not such a stupid question at all. I think that this is an honest attempt to walk in another person's shoes, as a kind of social experiment, and perhaps develop understanding and empathy for someone who is different than oneself.

There was recently an episode on a show called 30 Days, hosted by Morgan Spurlock, of the movie "Supersize Me" fame, that dealt with this very issue.

There were 2 families - one white, and one black. Each family had professional Hollywood makeup artists to turn them the opposite race.

Then, they would go to jobs, or shop or just go about their business, with cameras following them. They spoke about their experiences and noted whether they found things different now that they were the other race.

I thought it was a clever social experiment.

Also, about 40 years ago, there was a white man who wondered about racial stereotyping, made himself look black, went to the deep south, and he wrote a book about his experiences entitled "Black Like Me", that is a classic today.

Read the book to find out exactly what he used to make himself appear to be black, but he obviously succeeded, because he was able to pass as black. ( I seem to remember from when I read the book that he maybe used shoe polish and something else??)

even if you could do this, it won't fool anyone. they'll think you're some kind of nut, not a normal black person.

The best thing you can do to understand what it's like to be black is to read books by black people about the experience. they're the only people who know anything about it, and black people, in my experience, understand way more about the way white people think than white people understand about what black people think. I strongly recommend "Ways of White Folks" by Langston Hughes, "Black Boy" by Richard Wright, and "Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison. Also, anything by Toni Morrison (although I found "Beloved" to be a little over the top).

A man named John Howard Griffin did just that in order to understand what life was like for African-americans under segregation. He wrote a good book: "Black Like Me", published in 1960. Unfortunately, the methods (pills, I think) he used to become dark caused him eventually to die of cancer. Times have changed somewhat since 1960, but here is a source for it and some related books:

I have doubts this was a real question because of your wording. Some words group members use to describe themselves are impolite when used by outsiders. Please watch how you speak. There's an amazing amount of racial and religious intolerance sent in all directions on these boards. (And some people have sensitive antennas up to catch perceived slights.) If you aren't sincere, please don't post anything else like this. If you are sincere, just be more careful with what you say. Thanks!

there are some special effects creams like those used for movies, but they may be hard to find. I remember reading a biography a while back, where a white man did the same thing to experiance racial segregation, but not sure what he used.

Hmm that's abit odd
Try a Solarium, fall asleep in one that should turn you nice and crispy black.
or maybe opt for a spray tan but ask for the darkest colour possible.
You do realise you will look ridiculous don't you???

The color of your skin will not do it. Accept yourself for who you are. Be very careful with your wording, there are those who may take offense.
