Just wondering-
I've read that you eat fried potato chips with mayo on the streets in Amsterdam. Could you please descibe other types of food that you eat? Anything I should absolutely try that I wouldn't find anywhere else? Dank-u-wel!

I agree with Endie.
You should also try "boterham met hagelslag": an open sandwich with butter and tiny chocolate things.
Then there's the "kroket", a snack usually eaten with the french fries & mayonaise combo (did you get that from Pulp Fiction?). A kroket needs to be eaten with mustard.
Try our pancakes ("pannenkoeken") as well, as they are totally different from the ones in the US. A traditional Dutch pancake contains bacon (and is fried in the bacon's fat instead of in butter) and is eaten with syrup. It's a dinner dish rather than a breakfast dish.
A "stamppot" is a very traditional Dutch winter dish. It's mashed potatoes with some winter vegetable (usually some sort of cabbage, or otherwise carrots) and sausage or some other sort of meat. It's made and served in one pan. It's eaten with loads of gravy.
Or go to Hema (a Dutch department store, to be found all over the country) and order a "halve rookworst" (some sort of sausage). You can't get more Dutch than that!
And as Indonesia and Surinam are former Dutch colonies, there is a lot of lovely food from those countries as well. A traditional Dutch-Indonesian dish is "rijsttafel", loads of small but very tasteful dishes!

Go for a picturesque and relaxed walk past the Indonesian retaurants, past the pretty ladies resting in the windows, relax more at one of the cosy coffee and brownie bars and have a herbal smoke while you are there. Then, feeling even more relaxed stroll over into the red light district for some local traditional entertainment. Next day take a bus out to look at some tulip farms and windmills. Another day take a boat ride and see Anne Franks house.

Hi I'm Dutch,
We eat things like raw salted haring with onions, it's a traditional thing and we usually eat it in the street, too (just like the fries with mayonaise). Pick up the haring by it's tail, slap it through the some raw onions and hold it up. Now turn your face to the sky and let that haring slide into your mouth.
Sweet stuff: stroopwafels (sirup waffers), best eaten when warm. And ofcourse drop (Dutch double salted liqorice)

You must try "patat oorlog," a variation on the fries and mayo. This one mixes Indonesian sate (barbecue) sauce with the mayo. It's really good. Oorlog means war in Dutch. I'm not so sure if that refers to the unusual mix or to what happens in some people's stomachs after eating.

I agree with Endie and Judith.
In addition; the better restaurants do serve you food that looks like the French cuisine, but with more veggies.
