Spain is quite a seperated country, Almost everywhere you go you will find that the people are intensly proud of being spanish, but also intensly proud of the particular part of Spain they are from.

The Basque region of spain is probably the only exception to this, where lots of people do not consider themselves to be spanish at all. They are also active in terrorism to try and achieve this aim.

This is echo'd in a much less violent way by some people in catalunya, but for different reasons, they too wish fiercely for independance, however done in a more peacful way, catalunya is now an autonymous part of Spain. Like the Basque region of Spain, Catalunya is actually on both sides of the Spanish/French border.

Catalan is also a seperate language .. NOT a dialect of Spanish. However due to time and the mixing of the languages, most people in the area speak Catalonian Spanish, which is a patois of Spanish and Catalan.

catalan is a language of the catalonian(state) people of spain. They are different to the rest of spanish people, with their own culture and heritage and language. They are now autonomous, which means they run their own affairs without being ordered about by the spanish government. They see themselves as a state within a state, with nothing in common with other spanish states.

Catalonia (where they speak Catalan, a dialect of Spanish) is the province where Barcelona is located.
