drink the warm beer and pretend you like it! (really not so bad, when you get used to it; you might develop a taste for it--try Youngs or Fullers in London area). Good for washing down "ploughman's lunch" or curry & chips.

Remember your please and thank you....when shopping or in restaurants, "I would like a", not "I wanna"....yes, keep your voice down.

If you must compare things with how they are at home--do so mentally, not out loud

If you have ridden the subway at rush hour--you will feel at home on the tube.

As far as "culture and customs", UK (at least London) is probably more of a melting pot than most of US, so you will probably blend in with American clothes.

Don't expect things to be like they are at home. Do expect to be homesick, and give in the the Big Mac Attack once in a while when it strikes. Get away from the "must sees" like Stonehenge, Stratford etc. and maybe take a weekend break in a B&B in Dorset (beautiful countryside). Go to Wales or Scotland (UK isn't just England!).

Don't miss museums--they were being charged for, but I think most are free now, courtesy of National Lottery, so it would be a sin to miss the "big 3" British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum. I spent many days at these as a kid, esp, the British Museum. You could spend your whole trip just seeing different stuff at these!

all I can think of for now...hope some of it helps...have a great trip!

Forget Narcissus. You already recognize all the things that tick the world off against Americans so all you need to do is not do them. Knowing a bit about the culture helps and you can probably get that through reading British books and watching BBC. Aim for middle class behaviour and try to recognize British comedy. Hyacinthe Bucket is not the way to behave but Richard, Liz and even Onslow are good examples.

Well looking around the internet, I do see Americans getting bashed a lot, but I think my biggest tip is to actually act like an American, don't try on a british accent or lingo intentionally. But good luck with that, I would really kill to have a chance to study in the UK.

Just keep talking the way you do, you seem like you have quite a list of dislikes, but is it really in defence of Americans or a hidden rant against us? You say "whilst" whereas, no one in America does. I have my suspicions that you will not have to travel very far to study in England.

Most UK people get on well with Americans, we aren't really all that different from each other to be honest - your accent is probably the only thing that will get you get noticed. Don't worry, wear whatever you like, go where you want, and have fun. There are no set rules on how to behave really. Just be nice, be yourself, you'll be fine. :-)
