What is the difference between the "away" status msg and "Idle"? And would it be possible for the person to be actively using their computer, but have an "away" message come up? Thanks...

Away is a setting a person puts up manually - they can choose which message to put up (or if they even want a message), when they are away, and when they come back.

Idle is a setting that happens automatically. It leaves a default message when the computer running AIM has not been used in a span of time set by the user (usually 10 or 15 minutes), or if the computer is being used by a different windows user. The idle comes back when the user does.

It is possible to be Idle and Away at the same time.

Also, it is possible to be using the computer and even sending messages while away.

There is a third setting like Away and Idle that isn't as commonly used. It is called "Invisable" where the user appears to not even be online, but can still activly send people messages.

they mean basically the same thing. I set "Away" when I go to get some coffee or if I have to leave for a short while. It's set manually... "Idle" shows up if you don't use your computer for a while and shows up automatically. it is possible to be using the computer and still have an "Away" status. but as soon as you type something or move your mouse, the "Idle" status will go away automatically.

you can be "away" and still be using your computer. When your idle, it means that you literally are away from your computer. It willl come up automatically after a certain time passed without touching your computer. I think it is about 10 min.
