I bought a 1 gig stick(the geek squad assured me that it'd work with the other sticks) and I'm not sure which slots I should put all the sticks in. It has 4 slots and I don't know if I have to move either of the 500 sticks.

I would bet that the 2 500MB stickes would work best if they were set up in pairs. This might be two slots that are next to each other. But if you have alternating colored sockets, then use the 500MB sticks in the same color.

This should work out easy for you. Keep in mind that RAM is very fussy, if it does not work right away, it probably won't work. So give it ONE try then send it back.

Good luck

I hope you checked your Motherboard manual before you purchased the 1G RAM stick.

The reason I say this is that your MoBo may not support that much RAM in one slot.

You have to remember that those sites that guarantee the RAM will work with what you have are only saying that it is compatible with what you have in the PC already. So the 1G may be the same type of RAM but to much RAM for any individual slot. If that is the case usually the PC will not recognize the RAM you installed and will only reflect the two 512M sticks.

Usually the RAM slots are numbered 0, 1, 2, 3 for a four slot MoBo. Most commonly you always install the larger of your RAM in the upfront slots. In your case the 1G would go in slot 0, and each of the 512M sticks would go in slot 1, and slot 2.

I'm not familiar with "the geek squad" but I do use http://www.crucial.com to at least initially assess RAM types and what the MoBo is capable of handling. You can either put in your PC info (Gateway gt5238e) or let the tool determine what the system will handle.

BE ADVISED you need to review the MoBo manual to be sure how much RAM each slot will accommodate. This info should either be in a manual that came with your PC or it may be on a CD.

Good luck.

It really doesn't matter where you put them because now that you are adding a 1GB they are not going to be able to run in dual channel mode anymore, so you can basically put them wherever you want, but I would recommend just leaving the 512s where they are and adding the 1GB.

The Geek Squad are usually not qualified to do their jobs as it seems they have neglected to consider the dual channel issue when recommending this upgrade, they should have advised you to get two more 512 sticks, so that all four could run in dual channel mode.

the guy is correct who said that ram should be inserted in pairs do do remove the ones which came with the computer but if you have four slots it should go ... two slots which are full then skip a spot then insert your stick in the next on..got it?

I wouldn't move the ones that are already in there. And if they said it would work, then all you have to do is install it. Pull the locks up, put the ram in the correct way, push it down with equal force until the locks clip, or, untill its down all the way. Ram is a pretty straight forward upgrade.

placed one stick interior the left slot, turn it on and see if it runs, then do away with it and placed it interior the 2nd, see if it runs if specific to the two then the slots are stable now attempt the different stick if it works in the two one then it ought to be a rely of putting them each of how, i've got had that take place till now.
