I do not consider myself wasting my time as an English major. I am going into professional writing which actually puts me in direct competition wih anyone who majors in business. Communication is an incredibly important thing and actually makes all the difference in the business world. If you are talking about english as teaching, remember that any type of writing reflects that author and the time period it was written in. I good man learns from his mistakes while a wise man learns from the mistakes of others. Literature is an art form that records history and it is important to learn from our past. Art is also important because it gives a sense of release. I'm sure that there is something you do to relax after a stressful day. Art is one of those ways and it is very enlightening. You should ask why professional athletes get a ridiculously high pay check. English, Art and History are all necessary for the way this world works. I've always ben confused about the multi-million dollar athletes who claim they aren't paid enough for throwing a ball around for work.

Having my own Bachelor of Arts, I don't classify what I've done as a waste of time. It's definitely not for everybody - it really depends what your goals are. Some jobs in the arts pay well and some don't. Speaking for myself as a writer/editor, I have an insatiable passion for what I do and I believe my time at uni has added a lot to my depth of knowledge and given me avenues to persue that passion as a career. Whether or not you consider the money issue, they say if you're doing a job you love, you never work a day in your life. Sounds like something to live by.

English, to be a writer, or teacher, or a good speaker, to communicate with others from a strong position and to get your point across. A good speaker is a much better man in any given situation. Just ask the hostage negotiators for the FBI and Police.
History, to learn from the past. To teach.
Art is a soothing thing for some, a motivator for others. It works on our senses. Therefore it has great value in all cultures. And...to teach on the subject.

History is not a waste of time. It is not something dead and non applicable to the present. It leads to the future. By knowing the past you can know the present and future better. It can help you analyze why things will happen. It can show you what inevitable bad events coming up are from which mistakes made by exactly what, and what contributed to them. The way to surmount a troubled present is to know the past. The way to achieve a better future is to use the past as far back as you can look to check the present and change the future before it happens!

It's really a matter of perspective. We mainly go to movies or watch tv from home, instead of heading out to art galleries and group performances. Literature is neglected just like fine dining restraunts, in this fast food society. Our ultra-sedated people laxidazically trust our leaders; we have no time for history lessons.

It's not waste of time to major in liberal arts if you are going to continue with your education and get a masters degreee. Plenty of people go into law, museum administration, linguistics, speech pathology, and a host of other vocations with a liberal arts degree.

Well - maybe they will become school teachers. Or maybe they are planning on getting a Masters degree and their BA won't really matter that much. Or - perhaps they will become writers or historians or artists! It's THEIR time - so really - nobody except them can determine if it is wasted or not.

Maybe they are majoring in things they LIKE. There are such things as jobs for professors and teachers in these subjects, you know...as well as people with some pretty cool jobs, too. Perhaps more interesting than being something like, say...a doctor or an engineer.
