I've heard that before. Alot of the time, in Greek picture's they always include cat's and tell you that's one thing there's alot of.

I've been in that region and seen them. It's probably because there's so much fish from the Mediterranean and cats thrive on that, and also they probably don't spay or neuter them there. Just a guess.

The Egyptians use to idolize the cats and pay homage to them because they did keep the rats down. I'm not sure if they still do or not. Especially the Siamese. Thought to have a special gift of some kind.

Although I am Greek, I could not answer, because I never wondered.
Cats have always been there and as noone cares to castrate or sterilze them, the population keeps growing...
