There are limitations to system restore.

Based on my experience the following will make your system restore fail:
- after intensive hard disk defragmentation.
- after installing and running system software like registry cleaners and drive cleaners.

The system restore will just allocate a small percentage of your hard drive to store previous information. If the changes is too big the system restore will fail.

There are two things that might be causing the problem. First, your computer might have run out of hard drive space to save system restore points. Second, you might have accidentically disable the system restore service. Before doing anything, make sure to backup your data. Click on your hard drive and see how much free space is left. To check to see the system restore service is enabled, to Start menu > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > scrolled down to system restore service and make sure under status it reads "Started" and startup type reads "automatic."
