Also check craigslist.com. Look under rideshare. Check the site for both CA and NY. There are often people willing to split rides, take stuff or pay to have their stuff taken.
Also consider how much your furniture is worth to you. When I did it, I did a one way car rental and brought everything that would fit in a car. Futons and things were replaced at Ikea, etc. for less than $500. Shipping the crap I had would've been more. You can sell what u have on craigslist.com to help pay for your trip.
Also know that if you are shipping, books, media (not tv's), paper and similar stuff the post office will ship book rate - DIRT CHEAP. I was AMAZED and had most of my stuff before I made it cross country. But be careful, if they randomly check and find shoes, the will charge u regular rates which are like 5x more. Check www.usps.com. I think a 60 pound box was less than $15.
BE VERY VERY CAREFUL WITH MOVING SERVICES. Google 'moving service reviews' or something for all the horror stories. And they are expensive, if your stuff is worth it. My mom spent more than $5000 from CA to FL.
Uhaul usually has the best one way rates, but check ryder, penske and budget. If you have AAA get them to triptik your trip so you can see all the cool stuff. Everyone should drive cross country at least once

There is a whole bunch of people who will do it. Check the yellow pages. Some even deliver containers to your site. You fill them up and they ship them. However, likely the cheapest way would be to contact Ryder or U haul. However if the truck is very large,, over 18,000 lbs, you would need a CDL license to drive it. Most households do not have that much furniture, unless you have been accumulating furnature for a long time.

Before September I would have recommended U-haul, since they have a one-way moving truck drop-off service. But my experience with them was horrific and I can honestly say that they have the worst customer service (or lack thereof).
Most moving companies will make you pay to bring the truck back to its origin though. Good luck. Call around and see what you can find.

I work for ABF (commercial freight company) and we offer a nationwide, residential moving service called U-Pack Moving. It is a great option for a long-distance move like yours.
Here's how it works:
--You Pack: We bring a moving truck or a portable storage container (called a ReloCube) to your residence and you get up to two business days to pack and load your stuff.
--We Drive: We pick it up and drive it to your new residence. You get another two business days to unload.
--You Save: You pay only for the space you use in the truck. No additional charges for fuel, taxes, tolls, drivers fees, etc.
It's really simple and affordable. We have great customer reviews on Epinions.com, and we are recommended as a reputable mover on MovingScam.com.
Check out our site for moving tips and a free quote. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

There are moving services nationwide. Look up moving companies on the web and then put in your zip code to find one that services your area. My sister moved from California to Massachusetts. There was no way she was going to move all that stuff! Don't forget to look up coupons on the web for one of these moving companies also!

A moving service will, but look around, as you can easily get ripped off for this

1. you can contact a professional moving company.
2. when you pack, you need to decide whether an item is cheaper to ship or to buy new. The moving company provides rates, then you can do the math

Atlas moving or Mayflower will do it for you. Its a biotch finding parking if you are moving to the city! Better off getting someone to do it or sell it because you don't know what you are in for when you go to the city! Its hostility with a capital "H".
