It comes from a more formal time, when people who wrote letters to each other would, as a matter of course, sign their name at the bottom of the letter.
It's a courtesy, and a sign of a socially aware person.

Depends...
Some people do it just because they think that it is cute.
Some people do it because they answer so much they forget what their answer is when (if) they vote on that question.
And some do it to cheat......
(That's why when you vote the avatars don't show up, so that it is anon.)
(I like to think that most people do it because they think that it's cute though.)
Added: Your welcome, and technically, people aren't supposed to do it, it's against the CG (Community Guidelines). People have been getting reported for it (Point Gaming). To each his/her own I say :)
