This really works! Use same amount of table salt to the same amount of water softener powder (sold near the laundry products in the grocery store). Heat water until very hot and mix with mixture in an aluminum deep dish pan. Dip silver items into pan. Use only on silver or silver plated items with no black detail, as it will remove the detail. Do not use on jewelry with stones.

Pick an inconspicuous place on the silver and try some toothpaste. It used to be that toothpaste was a good substitute for silver polish in an emergency, but now, with all the new stuff in toothpaste, I would be careful to test it first.

Get a glass pan, line it w/aluminum foil - shiny side up, add boiling water & tump in some baking soda - stir it up. Put your silver item onto aluminum and watch the filth disappear.
