Henri II was king of France (1031 to 1059). Henri II started to oppress his protestant subjects (Huguenots) as soon as he came to the throne.
he was married to Catherine of Medici, who assumed the regency when he died in 1059. She was regent during the minority of her two sons François II and Charles IX. (who she continued to influence as queen mother). She advised the slaughter of the Hueguenots of Paris on the infamous Massacre of the Day of Saint Bartholomew in 1572.
Charles IX,(1560-1574) her son, reigned during the time of the Wars of Religion. and on her instigation ordered the above named massacre of the Huguenots.
