Not as "revolutionary" as we would like to think! The upper class in Colonial society remained the upper class in American society. Likewise, the legal system and other social and political forms established before the revolution remained in place afterward as well.
It wasn't until I went on a school tour and visited some of the sites that I began to realize what the revolution was really about. It was, in a word "respect" or, if you like, "rights." They fought for the "rights of Englishmen!" The rights they believed their ancestors had secured, but were now being trampled upon.
When the "colonists" objected to the policies of "the crown" they were punished by military occupation and economic repression (troops were landed, ports were closed, local governments were suppressed). These were the same tactics used against Ireland to reduce the Irish to servitude in the 17th century. That put the colonists up in arms. They were ENGLISHMEN, not Irish dogs!

revolutionary: a sudden, complete, or marked change
The American Revolution marked a period of time when the colonies wanted to suddenly seperate from Britain. Why, here's an example:
Pretend Texas wanted to break off from the US. That's revolutionary, isn't it?
Britain, at the time, were the most powerful people on Earth. So even the prospect of fighting them, considering that the colonies were very small and dependent on Britain, was significant.

more of a family squabble than a revolution? riiight.
anyway, unique in its time, one of the first on such a scale, if not the only, not to mention a model for other countries to follow--france used the american revolution as a model for their revolution later that same century.
