I know that my one particular employer is in fact doing it...I am running low on options and ideas....

Yes, you can. And if you feel that you must put them down as a reference, where the app asks why did you leave, just put "personal".

Yes, you can, but if you worked at that job for any length of time. the gap in employment you will create may not be in your best interest either.
Your references will not generally be checked prior to an interview so, use the interview to explain your side of things. Were you terminated from that job? Why?
Let's say you had a disagreement with your boss at that job and just quit. What have you since learned? Do you now understand that it would have been better to work things out?
You need to turn the negatives from that job into positives. Show your prospective employer you have learned from your mistakes.

When you are applying for a job, it helps when you tel your interviewer why you think your old employers is blackballing you. People respect you more when you tell them what is going on up front.

if yuo can prove they are dileberatly slandering you or lieing about your work record there you can sue them for that .
Many companie s will do so especialy if a particuar supervisor doesn't like you.
Just omit them as a reference and forget them unless a reques tis aske dfor , than explain the circumstances.
