When I advise people on toys, I suggest something where they can interact with other people. Leave the screens alone, they love social interaction.
More than anything, I've found that kids want time with their parents. They want their parents full involvement without distractions, so games that adults have fun playing, too.
For the boy:
Super Marbleworks.
Pump Action Racer
"I Can Write"
Stargo (like bingo only it has constellations)
Net Catch
A to Z Jr
Wiz kids
Zip Track
What's Gnu?
Think it through tiles
For the girl:
A big white board and a pack of many colors of dry erase markers and an eraser, etc.
Girls also seem to like craft things, dolls, etc.
There's a cute book called: Once Upon a Time where the story changes each time.
"Starting Write"
Zingo
Playful Patterns
Its a Match level 3
Animal Twins
Puppets
Wild Woods
Special hair detangler or hair clips

I have a five year old daughter who wants absolutely everything she sees on TV, so at least I'm used to dealing with the same age group as your kids.
TMX Elmo is the hot toy this year, and perfect for this age group. However, good luck finding that one! LOL. Bikes are always a popular choice with kids. I'd also suggest maybe a Leappad system for each of them, or a V-Smile game system, since they both lean toward the educational side while still being lots of fun for the kids. Fisher Price this year has put out digital cameras aimed toward little ones in this age group. I checked them out the last time I was shopping and they seem very user friendly. I don't know about your little ones, but mine just loves the idea of having a camera like Mommy's.
For your son, Hot Wheels sets are usually good bets with boys, as are Legos (Toys R Us carries a Spongebob Lego set that is a replica of the Krusty Krab) and remote-controlled cars. Anything with Spiderman, Superman, Power Rangers, or Ben 10 would probably be a good bet as well.
For your daughter, I'd suggest the Dora the Explorer talking kitchen or fairy tale castle. There is also a Little Mermaid talking vanity that is just adorable. I'd skip the Easy Bake Oven for a year or two, since at that age they need LOTS of oversight with it. A FurReal Friend might be a great idea too. And of course, most little girls that age love Barbies and babies.
If your kids are into movies, there are some very appropriate ones that will be released on DVD before Christmas: Cars, the Little Mermaid, Over the Hedge, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, Barbie 12 Dancing Princessess, and The Wild.
Good luck with the shopping!

My vote for your kids and for mine is anything that keeps them from sitting in front of the TV or at the computer. I am going to buy toys I played with as a kid this year. I found a place that sells Lincoln Logs. I am getting jump ropes and scooters and marbles and anything else I can find that will cause them to use their own imaginations and keep their little bodies active and busy outside in the fresh air, or that they can play with the TV off.
Just one mom's suggestion.......

Arts and crafts kits are always a great idea. There are so many out there to help them be creative and keep them busy. When my kids were that age we would buy Lego's, play-doh, paints, an easel, a chalkboard with chalk etc.

LEGOS have great sets for both girls and boys, adventure, and this toy lasts forever, great play value and they use their imagination to build things. My daughter then 8 had a Mega Blocks ( compatible with Lego) Fantasy set and she had hours of fun with it. Drawing kits, are good too. Think educational, and exercise toys.

ahh yes,
for the older child , might I recomend an earlier game sytem such as the X box or ps2, as they will be much cheaper now than before, or an hand held game system such as psp or gameboy DS.
alas I am not sure of any ideas for the younger child other than games for any system if you already have it.

find out what is popular with the other kids in their classes and go from there. heres a thought, if they don't ask for anything specific. then just give them the little stuff. i'll bet they won't make that mistake next year.
