The Top Five safest and healthiest towns on Rhode Island:
1 Bucolic Glocester, with its forested and farmed lands, scored well in all areas, making it the healthiest and safest town in the state. It’s not surprising that the town is quiet and low on crime considering its distance from the city and the fact the town’s police force has been increased by 30 percent since 1999. Also, $1.6 million in state funding has been spent over the past four years on open space and parks. The Glocester Greenway System now makes up a sizeable percent of the town’s land, making for cleaner air and miles of walking trails. And Chepachet Village Green has been acquiring more land for walking trails and picnic shelters, encouraging its citizens to get out and enjoy this gem of northwest Rhode Island.
2 Burrillville was a consistent scorer in the survey, faring particularly well in health, with residents showing a very low incidence of breast and prostate cancer. Not only do the streets of this northern town seem to be safe for pedestrians but for drivers as well; the town ranked second in fewest motor vehicle accidents. Burrillville also boasts high spending on its more established parks, including Hauser Memorial Field and Branch River Park. Maybe the planned addition of a skate park will help keep children out of trouble as well.
3 Neighbor to number-one Glocester, Foster may be better known for school snow days than anything else. But maybe it should be known for its peaceful atmosphere. The town ranked first in safety with the lowest rate of domestic violence and property crime and the second lowest rate of violent crimes. It is interesting to note that Foster has had only seven sworn police officers since 1996. Foster’s land trust has also been working with the state, adding to their own greenway project that extends across the top of the town to the Connecticut border with further funds to protect the Ponagansett River.
4 Historic Bristol has one of the most famed waterfronts in the state, hosting the country’s oldest Fourth of July parade. And it’s the spending on parks and historical landmarks for open space and recreation that has moved the town up the list. Its citizenry also scores well in health, having some of the lowest cancer rates in the state.
5 Little Compton is rarely in the spotlight as far as towns go. And that’s probably one of the reasons this little coastal town, once a Massachusetts community, has the fewest number of car accidents and some of the lowest property and violent crime in the state. The town ranks only twenty-second in the environmental category, but state funding doesn’t tell the whole story. Little Compton’s all-volunteer land trust raises most of its own funds for land protection, persuading neighbors to donate their land, or at least their development rights, to the town. Is there a catch to living in a place with this much open space and low crime? Yes, the average single family home there costs $410,000, the third highest average in the state

I've lived in Newport, Providence and Barrington. My pick is Newport. It's a good size and has all of the services you need and it's easy to get to Providence or Boston. Plus, I like the history and architecture.
When I was a kid (a long, long time ago), my grandmother took me to the White Horse Tavern. I've loved Indian Pudding ever since.

Billy has been very informative, but all of his towns are in the Northern part of the state. If you like the coast and want RI for the beach scene, I suggest Newport, Narragansett, Wakefield, westerly or South Kingstown. Washington County (or South County as it's often referred to) is beautiful and Southern NE picturesque.
