Most American high school start the academic year in late summer and continue until late spring. THe normal school year in the USA is between 180 - 190 full days (approx 8AM - 2:30PM) Classes normally last for the entire year. A class would normally meet for about 50 minutes to one hour. Sometimes science lab courses last 2 hours.

Most USA high school students are following a pre-college series of courses. THat would include four years of English, and three to four years of science, mathematics, history and foreign language. The top students usually take four years of math, science and foreigh language. In some cases very good students may have finished a year of math or language in the middle school (8th grade) before entering high school (grades 9, 10,11, 12) so they may be on a 5th year of studies in Spanish, French, German, or other language.A few schools teach Italian, Latin, Hebrew, Greek, Russian, Chinese or Japanese language. Most students take a year of biology, a year of chemistry and a year of physics, but some may take a second year of biology or chemistry at an advanced level equal to the introductory level. These courses may be designated AP (Advanced Placement) - at the end of the year if you pass a hard test, you may get credit for the course when you enter college.

Most students in American high schools are graded rather softly - the average for all graduating students is B to B+ on a scale F/D/C/B/A.
