Depends on where you live, and what your having notarized (how many pages). If you have them come to you, it is going to be more expensive, as they are able to charge for travel expense.

I used to be a Notary, and I wasn't allowed to charge more than about ten dollars. However, if this is through a closing company for a real estate transaction, the closing company pays the notary.

Depends on the state. There is a set fee that the notary charges. If the charge more you can report them. A lot of banks will notarize for free if you are a customer.

In North Carolina the statutory MAXIMUM fee is $5.00. It is illegal for a Notary to charge any more...even for travel and expenses.

Pretty much every bank, real estate office, insurance broker, lawyers' office, and car dealer has a Notary on staff who would probably do it for you for the statutory fee (lunch money.)

I have heard it is $2-$4. If they charge you more, report them.
