I have a difficult time understanding why so many Americans don't think the national debt is a problem. What can we do to free ourselves from this enourmous debt that is now $8.5 Trillion.

Stupid question? Really. Well a number of countries have opted against paying their debts back. Our current administration is presently runing the largest deficit ever. And Cheney even said, "Reagan proved deficits don't matter". What are the Republicans trying to do, bankrupt our nation?

Common Sense, I agree with you that we can't default on our debt like some 3rd world nations. We should be responsible. So if we are going to be responsible, shouldn't we start paying the debt we owe?

Couldn't agree with you more. As an independent conservative, I'm very disappointed with the President and Congress for doing almost nothing to tackle the problem of the national debt.
There is no reason, unless we are involved in a declared war, for the US government to run a deficit.
