you must keep adding fresh water to a tank, the water can be depleted of oxygen. esp. be careful with goldfish, more than a few in a tank means you have to have more than one airator. Also, a way to tell your fish are in desperate need of fresh water, they will begin to skim the top of the tank, like they are gulping air. once that starts it could only take a few hours to a day before the fish dies.

Fish often drown when they let the water out of dams. The water down below gets compressed and loses its oxygen holding capacity. usually they let the water out from a height so that it splashes and regains it oxygen content, but in the past here have been some big fish kills due to this.

fish can stay still and force water through their kills but sharks must keep moving for it to flow through, even when they sleep

yes, fish need to continually force water through their gills to utilize oxygen from the water - they do this by swimming... otherwise they sufficate.
