Which do YOU prefer? Cartoons or anime. It's YOUR OPINION. So don't say anything like 'Most people like this blah blah blah!' Best reason for what you prefer gets 10 points.
I choose cartoons I'll say why later.

The anime and animation are two different words. Anime is a japanese cartoon, and animation is any type of cartoon. So don't complicate it please. And the big eyes and head thing, so what? It's a cartoon, cartoons are suppose to do silly things like that or just to show emotion. And secondly the reason why I love cartoons a little more than anime is because I love the pop culture jokes in it. Like the "Simpsons' they have so many seasons it's hard to count. They have a lot of great jokes and even though the DETAIL isn't 'realistic' or stuff I prefer cartoons that are funny and not SO serious all the time. Cartoons, anything can happen in it and so can Anime. Anime is just the japanese version of American cartoons. Techinically American Cartoons may have been here first (praise Bugs Bunny and Micky Mouse) but it does not mean anime isn't any better. Cartoons they have their antics and some are boring but so is some anime. Like my favorite anime NGE, the last two episodes put me to

sleep after ten seconds. But on family guy most of the episodes put me to sleep because it's the same joke most of the time!(praise simpsons). But cartoons, what i lvoe msot of is that it ISN'T realistic. Anything can happen, there are no boundries to what can happen. A piano falling from the sky to a sponge...living...in a pineapple...family guy and south park aren't the only cartoons, so don't just compare those with anime. what about fairly oddparents( yes i watch it, I'm a kid get over it). the storyboards are great, it's creative and junk. And plus, there are cartoons that are serious...nevermind. But I still side with cartoons and I'm going to stick with them. And this is a question of what your opinion is, not which IS better of all time. But they are equal. besides, who said Love Hina was actiony?

There are things that I like about both. The things that I love about anime is the action scenes that the creators are able to portray and the original story lines that they are able to come up with. Cartoons though may not have great action scenes but do have a way with making you laugh. Anime jokes are usually very corny and are not funny in any sense. But all in all I'd say anime.

"Cartoons" are far better for a number of reasons.
Anime pretends to be realistic while then defying the laws of phyisics and such It may be amusing but consider it the japanese version of Kung fu theatre.
Much like kung fu theatre, as fun as it is to watch chop-socky flicks, they all follow the same formula with little or nothing fresh, running the same old themes and nonsensical reactions. Eventually it gets tiring. Overall Most anime sucks for this reason. It pretends to be realistic but is not, and has the same or similar plot or themes running throughout the entire show. The same character types that are successfull are re used in almost every anime.
This is why the "best" anime ever was the episode of south park entitled "Fun With Weapons". It basically summed up every anime stereotype and show that was ever produced and parodied it. Then switched the focus to something totally different for the great conclusion.
Cartoons aimed at comedy for example, NEED to be fresh and original. There can be some stereotypes and many jokes might hinge on them, but in order to surpass this it needs to be fresh. Looney tunes is just way too classic. Taking the basic "chase" scenes to the next level (they were only 5 minuite shorts) and incorporating pop culture references of the time.
Another way to compare is the few- cross styles they have done. Anime is just not funny. So called cutesy anime cartoons don't work. However when South Park spoofed anime in anime style it Ironically was better done even in jest better than any anime show ever. The song even surpassed "real" animes.
In conclusion, the best anime is done by american "cartoon" animators and the best "cartoon" looney tunes is done by american "cartoon" animators. Anime just can't win.

I prefer both, but if I absolutely had to pick, I would choose anime.
I feel like im betraying my American self but.. anime seems alot more action-packed and the ones i watch have alot of puns and funnier humor than most cartoons. The drawing styles of some animes are also really cool, and keep my attention for hours at a time XD normal cartoons make me a bit tired after an hour or so

Despite my current pic, I prefer cartoons overall. For one, no cartoon will ever top Bugs Bunny. Second, there are only a few animes I really like. Animes have to be really really good to hold my attention. Third, animes are complex, which can be great if done right, but sometimes they are down-right confusing, but cartoons are simple humor which is what I need to make me laugh after a rough day.

It's true that American artist such as Chuck Jones and Walt Disney influenced anime, but Osamu Tezuka and Shirow Masamune made it possible for anime to deviate from it's western counterpart. The expression "all cartoons are anime, but all anime are not cartoons" is true. I believe that anime has evolved beyond a means of entertainment. It's the only animated form that can address the issues of society without limitations. I learned so many valuable lessons from manga and anime. I learned that to dream is to live from One Piece. I learned compassion for humanity from Gundam and I even learned about love. "A sinner once passed away will never return, but sins will never vanish and the love will never die."-Noir.
Most of my views about the world came from anime, I don't think I would be the same person I am today if it didn't exist. I prefer anime for numerous reasons, but most obvious is how anime is produced, the camera angle effects, the well written dialogue and the emphasis on character development allows anime to be more than just cartoons. If anything it's cinema in animated form.
why do they have big eyes and huge mouths? This myth should be met with hypocrisy considering that early anime artist were influenced by the likes of Walt Disney and Chuck Jones. They would emulate this "Americanized" look and apply these to their early character design, which in turn became the basis for drawing anime. You'll find that this is not the case for most anime, contemporary artist such as Shirow Masamune have taken up a more realistic design for their characters

It depends on what are you seeing. For example if its "The Teen Titans" I would classify it has "anime". The reason is the way the characters in the "Teen Titans" would have large heads when they get upset or happy. Another example is "Cinderella" and most people would call it a cartoon. I personally call it "animation". Hell even certain animation such as "Cars", "The Incredibles" and "Toy Story" would be classified as animation because most of the characters are moving or animated. Originally, cartoons were not meant for children but for adults. I hope this helps you out on your question.

I like them both. Anime for the action and seriousness; cartoons for the humor. If I was made to choose, however, I would pick anime.
