Nutmeg, botanical name: Myristica fragrans, is a tropical tree native to South East Asia. It requires a warm and humid climate with an average rainfall of 150 cm or higher. Nutmeg bears male and female flowers on separate trees, therefore requiring at least two trees to be grown if pollination is to take place. It can be difficult to determine the sex of seedlings. Female trees start producing fruit after 6 years, but peak production is reached in about 20 years. Nutmeg is the dried seed, while mace is the dried covering the seed.
The dried bark that you were thinking of is cinnamon, not nutmeg. This is the tree Cinnamomum verum, native to southern India and Sri Lanka.

Cool. Plant an almond and wait a while. Nutmeg is the outer bark of an almond.
