Should English be the standard language in public schools, or should schools be required to offer classes in the language a student speaks at home? Why?

They should balance the needs of their students. They should not be required to teach in other languages, but it would be stupid to not offer classes in other languages if a substantial portion of the students are not proficient in English. If you don't, the kids are just going to sit there, learn nothing, and be a problem in the school and in society later on.

Since the language of commerce and law in the USA is English, then the language of instruction in the schools should be English. The schools should offer second language courses in the language(s) of the students it teaches. In the event that the USA decides to officially make itself bilingual, then the public schools should also offer full instruction in both languages. This will likely result in English only schools and bilingual or immersion schools in the same school board and higher costs and more busing.

American public schools should offer instruction in as many languages as they possibly can, in order to educated all students--native english speakers or otherwise--the importance of speaking more than one language.

I think english should be standard in the US. It should be our countries language, I don't go to China and expect people to speak English do I?

So no I don't think schools should offer that.

I don't care if they TEACH languages but to have a class with just their native language is dumb.

The single biggest reason for why it should be english, and english alone, is cost. Public schools are always struggling with budgets, making cuts to programs, etc. To force them to offer classes purely in specific languages would mean schools have to pay for special instructors, pay for special books and learning materials, etc.

No. English should be the only language in our public school system. Teaching in ones own language is setting them up for failure if they plan on living in America. Welcome to America, speak English ortherwise... Adios.
