Are they the same, or are california converters made to reduce a huge amount more smog than a regular one for another state.

All cars made have the same Catalytic converters for that model year, make etc. California does not require a special CAT, but they do require a semiannual SMOG check on your vehicle to assure it meets requirements.

Cats work the same in all states. Calif has much more stringent air quality standards. We have to, because we have more cars.

When the vehicle is made, the mfg has no idea where it is going to eventually be driven. CA has no impact on the designing or engineering of a particular vehicle.

As to huge amounts of smog reduction, I can only (cough!) hope.

Catalytic converters are made the same ... regardless of what state you live in.
