If car companies truly were concerned with the safety of the driver, than the vehicles they produce would not reach speeds of 140 mph, 160 mph, 200 mph. There is never a reason to go that fast. Alot of you probably think "The spedomoter says 140, but my car really only goes 90". WRONG I have driven 120 mph with plenty of room to speed up left. It is a joke. Nobody cares about society.

I've often thought this myself. The automobile is potentially dangerous enough inside the average speed limit never mind those excessive speeds. I just shook my head in disbelief at the person who said in his answer that the existence of the empire state building didn't make you want to jump off it.. DUH... The Empire State Building was not built to tempt people to jump out any of its windows in the first place. But a car (which is intended to be driven) that manufacturers have produced clearly to be driven on public highways and byways, was given that kind of highspeed capability in the full knowledge that the majority of people who buy that type of c ar will not only be tempted to test it out, but probably will at some point. The person who made that dopey comment sounds to me like exactly the kind of individual who, if he got behind the wheel of a car like that , would not only do just that, but then either claim he had the perfect right to, or if he got into a serious wreck, do a complete about turn and try to sue the manufacturers of the car for putting that temptation within his reach. I don't think that bird would fly, but I do believe automobile companies need to take a long hard look at building vehicles for the general public that often just pander to their "race driver alter ego"

You obviously are a Liberal who doesnt believe in personal responsibility. Otherwise you wouldnt expect the car companies to limit you from going 120 mph in defiance of the Law.
And what makes you think there is "never a reason to go that fast"? Do you want to put the racing industry out of work? How irresponsible of you to force people to give up good paying jobs and take food from their childrens tables just because You can't restrain yourself.

Car safety is the avoidance of car accidents or the minimization of harmful effects of accidents, in particular as pertaining to human life and health. Road traffic injuries represent about 25% of worldwide injury-related deaths (the leading cause) with an estimated 1.26 million deaths in 2000 (Peden 2002).

Major factors in accidents include driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs; inattentive driving; driving while fatigued or unconscious; encounters with road hazards such as snow, potholes, and crossing animals; or reckless driving.

Unfortunately, the car companies only make the vehicle. It is the driver who needs to be more responsible, such as NOT driving recklessly. You can hurt someone driving at 25 miles per hour; not just high speeds. Perhaps we should go back to the horse and buggy days to ensure maximum safety.

LOOK IF YOU GET OUT THERE AND DRIVE A CAR AT 140 MPH YOU ARE THE STUPID ONE THAT KIND OF SPEED IS FOR THE RACE TRACK NOT THE HWY. THE CAR MANUFACTURES ARE NOT TELLING YOU TO GO THAT FAST. THEY BUILT THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING DID YOU GO JUMP OFF OF IT BECAUSE YOU COULD? YOUR QUESTION IS JUST THAT STUPID. IN RESPONSE TO THE PERSON THAT DIDN'T LIKE MY ANTIDOTE ABOUT THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING THE YES I HAVE DRIVEN A CAR IN EXCESS OF 160 MPH BUT I AM NOT STUPID ENOUGH TO DO SO ON PUBLIC HWYS. I PROBABLY HAVE BEEN DRIVING BEFORE YOU WERE BORN. RESPONSIBILITY IS THE KEY IN DEFENSIVE DRIVING AND IF YOU HAD ANY YOU WOULDN'T BE TAKING SIDES WITH THIS PERSON TRYING TO BLAME EVERYBODY ELSE FOR YOUR STUPIDITY.
